Cocoon Retreat

it was infatuation mostly
that drew me to you
moth to flame
as dark is to light
you moved me once

now your words are just echoes
in the empty caverns of my heart
our memories constantly projected
on the movie screen interior of my skull

i knew you
at one point
but i don't recognize you now
like a backward butterfly
from beautiful to boring

i miss you
and the way it used to be
but you are the him i never knew
or wished to know
the gift you were
stolen
from underneath my nose

i cherish what we had
and mourn for what we've lost

i wish you'd come back again.
